How do I turn off Sign Language on Last of Us (HBO MAX)

There is no Max default profile option on the Max website.  There is an OPTION when you logon to the show IN THE MAX AP to change to a non-Sign Language (WHY IT DEFAULTS TO THIS - I HAVE NO IDEA. . . would love to meet that user interface engineer some day).  But, there is NO OPTION when you access the show inside of XFinity Max HBO.  I can not find a global preference to not have a dancing man in the corner of my screen while I try to watch the show.  Any plans to correct this some day?

Thanks for bringing this up — we totally get how distracting that can be!

 

Right now, the sign language option on The Last of Us is controlled within the Max app itself, and unfortunately, when you’re watching through Xfinity’s Max integration, those same settings aren’t always available. We agree it’s not the smoothest experience, and we know how much a global preference setting would help.

 

While we can’t control the Max app’s design, we’re happy to pass along your feedback. In the meantime, using the Max app directly is the best workaround to adjust those settings.

Nope. That only works randomly. I’ve just spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to get rid of the ever present ASL interpreter. I’m all for it being an option. Heck, I use CC almost everyone I watch something on tv, so I get needing an assist. Not I would never want the assist that I use be forced onto viewers that are distracted or bothered by it. 

20 minutes. Just to find a way to play it in a way that should be the default. They’re about to lose me as a viewer if I have to go through this every time I want to watch an episode.

@TarGree​ and how DID you finally disable it?   I can't get the Max app to authenticate using my Xfinity ID, so I'm stuck watching it via Xfinity...

I understand not wanting to jump through hoops to see the program without that, @TarGree! We don't want that either. Our engineers are working to get this resolved so it will function normally.

Absolutely ridiculous to not be given an option to select watch preferences and to have to be subjected to the very distracting ASL guy. Will be cancelling subscription due to this annoying feature

I hate this ASL guy on The Last of Us.Please get it off my screen now! With how much comcast costs you would think we would have a little more control.

Eventually it had to happen. Remember when you could watch movies without commercials? Now we pay for extra services AND have to watch commercials. 

And, FYI, It only prompts me NOT to buy the products I'm forced to watch because it's just another slap in the face.

This is so unacceptable to have the ASL dude on my screen. There is no known way to eliminate him. Are you kidding! My subscription to MAX is soon to expire. I will not renew.

@Ijas Thank you for bringing your concern to our attention so we can help you watch your favorite shows using the language option that works best for you :). In the HBO MAX app, please open the Audio and Subtitles menu, open audio, and make sure your preference is set to English. Are you able to watch your content without the ASL interpreter when you adjust these settings?

user_13tmwg As we previously mentioned, if you are watching the live broadcast, you can use your remote to see if you can disable this feature. Otherwise, we suggest using the Max App to disable this setting for your best viewing experience.

So how do you disable this when it’s a “free this week?”  I tried to access via the Max app and it says I need a subscription. I looked under watch options and there’s no ASL option. This isn’t through Max, but through Xfinity.

I have the same response as everyone here it’s ridiculous there isn’t an option to turn it off.  Very disappointing Xfinity. Guess I’m subscribing to max through Prime instead. Thanks!

@user_cb2aqa, I like your ingenuity. If you have a smart TV or streaming device you can also use the "Connect with your provider" option. That way you can still have simple billing with Xfinity, but still have the ability to take the app with you on the go. The article below will have some detailed instructions on how to go about doing such.
